PUNJAS GAIN TOP MARK! – Punjas Biscuits obtains British Retail Consortium (BRC) A+ Rated Certification

Punjas Biscuits is one of the first biscuit manufacturers in the Asia Pacific Region to have been awarded the prestigious BRC A+ accreditation within such a short timeframe from commencing operations in December 2014 at Lautoka.

So what are the benefits of BRC Food Safety Certification and what does it mean for Punjas?

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) is the leading trade association for UK retailing. Although the BRC food safety standard began in the UK, it is now recognized as a global standard. BRC initially developed its Global Standard for Food Safety in order to help the food industry meet legislative requirements of the EU General Product Safety Directive and the UK Food Safety Act.

The BRC was the first standard to be recognized as meeting the GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative) benchmarked food safety scheme. Benchmarking to GFSI ensures that the BRC Global Standard for Food Safety is accepted by many of the world’s biggest retail groups, e.g., Walmart. The BRC’s ability to react to changing food safety concerns, meet customer requirements, and yet provide a simple, easy-to-follow process for manufacturers, has resulted in the Standard becoming one of the most popular GFSI standards.

The BRC Standard meets the strong need to preserve the integrity of branded products. The BRC Global Standard for Food Safety is a single verification that ensures both the fulfilment of legal obligations and of customer protection. It is currently used by suppliers in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, the Far East, North and South America and Australia.

Individual consumers, consumer advocate groups, and governments are demanding safe, quality food. In response to this demand, increasing numbers of retailers and food service providers, restauranteurs and caterers, are mandating that their suppliers receive third-party certification with a Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) approved scheme. The Standard provides benefits not only for the retail industry, but also for food manufacturers, importers, caterers, ingredient suppliers and the food service industry and is an international mark of excellence for the certificate holder.

If a supplier gains the BRC Global Standard for Food Safety certification, it assures the customer that they are dealing with a company that reaches high levels of competence in all critical areas. They will know that their supplier is monitoring and continually improving their product quality, safety and legality, and that they have taken every possible precaution to prevent problems should there ever be a challenge made against a product. The certification audit report will be one of the documents an enforcement authority would require from a retailer or brand owner to demonstrate that their supplier was competent to produce a safe and legal product.
